Dallas Stars hockey player Sean Avery has been suspended from the NHL indefinitely for negative comments he made about ex-girlfriend Elisha Cuthbert, who is now dating Calgary defenseman Dion Phaneuf . In a statement to the media after morning practice, Avery slammed Phaneuf for dating the actress.

“I am really glad to be back in Calgary, I love Canada. I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy second. I don’t know what that’s about. Enjoy the game tonight,” Avery told reporters.

The Stars supported NHL commissioner Gary Bettman’s decision to suspend Avery. “Had the league not have suspended him, the Dallas Stars would have. This organization will not tolerate such behavior, especially from a member of our hockey team. We hold out team to a higher standard and will continue to do so,” said team owner Tom Hicks.

Avery, who has also dated model Rachel Hunter, is banned from playing until a hearing with Bettman.
